I refer to the article “Silent screams” (The Economist, Dec 3).

S’pore 2nd highest inmates per 100,000 population?

The chart shows that Singapore, at about 250, is the second highest out of nine countries for “inmates per 100,000 population, 2013”.

According to the Singapore Prisons Service release of statistics on 23 January 2015 – the Total Convicted Penal Admissions for Y2014 was 11,595.

The Total Convicted Penal Population for Y2014 was 9,754.

The Total Convicted Penal Releases for Y2014 was 11,955.

No. released about the same as no. admitted per year?

On the average there were about 12,500 Admissions per year in the last three years, and about 12,500 Releases.

Does it mean that the number admitted is about the same as those released per year?

How many ex-offenders?

How many ex-offenders in total are there?

The recidivism rate has increased from 23.6 per cent for the Release Cohort 2010 to 27.6 per cent for 2012.

What are your thoughts on the above statistics?

(Note: The Drug Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) inmates population was 1,400 in Y2014, Releases was 1,350 and Admissions was 1,139.)
