Only 18% gave NWC increase?

NWC recommends wage increase

I refer to the article “National Wages Council proposes pay hike range for low-wage workers” (Straits Times, Jun 1).

It states that “But non-unionised companies have largely ignored the NWC guidelines, which are not legally binding.

Only 18% of companies gave increase?

Only 18 per cent of companies, the majority of which are not unionised, gave their low-wage workers a pay rise of at least $60 last year, as specified by the NWC.

Don’t you find it rather sad that only 18 per cent of companies gave the recommended increase.

Increase for how many workers?

How many workers did not get the increase?

As to “In contrast, half of the unionised companies here followed the NWC guidelines.

Still, workers have generally benefited from the guidelines.

112,900 earn less than $1,000?

Local workers earning a monthly pay of up to $1,100 fell from 130,100 in 2014 to 112,900 last year, said the Ministry of Manpower” – don’t you find it rather sad that there are still so many local workers getting less than $1,100 gross income monthly, despite working full time.

After deducting their CPF contribution which I understand is included in gross income – how do these workers survive with the rising cost of living which has made Singapore the most expensive city in the world, according to the EIU?
