Leong Sze Hian has published his 5th book: “Uniquely Singapore – The Untold Story of the COVID-19 Battle”
Extract from the foreword by Prof Paul A Tambyah
President-elect, International Society of Infectious Diseases
“I firmly believe that a questioning voice is vitally important for any organization, society, academic institution or nation. When I was head of my division, the most valuable member of the team was the bright young academic who made it a point to criticize almost every proposal I made. I felt that his criticism or at least anticipating his questions made me come up with better ideas or at least avoid some important minefields. Leong Sze Hian performs this role uniquely for the people of Singapore. He has been described by our prime minister as a “thorn in our side in a small way for a very long time”. The Biblical thorn in the side according to some scholars refers to an annoyance used by the divine to keep the human leadership humble which I think fairly accurately describes what Leong has been doing successfully for years.
We should be very grateful as a nation to Mr Leong for his constant reminders of the various numbers, programs and policies put out by the technocrats in our government. Each time he raises a question, I am sure that some civil servant somewhere is rushing to find out the details surrounding the policy or report. The civil servant will inevitably find out that most of the time Leong is correct, even if the spin he puts on the data is not quite the same as the official version. Once or twice, he has made changes when errors are pointed out, but he has been remarkably consistent for someone who deals in huge volumes of numbers. You may not agree with his interpretation of the data but it is hard to fault his citations.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented not in terms of the actual medical impact where it is dwarfed by the great influenza pandemic of 1918 but in terms of the impact it has had on public policy and scientific and public health discourse globally. Singapore is no exception with a flurry of public health measures and economic measures rolled out at a breakneck pace. This volume collects Leong Sze Hian’s contemporaneous commentary on various statistics and policies put out by the “4G leadership” of the Singapore government in trying to deal with the pandemic. Like me, you may not agree with some of his interpretations of the data but you will definitely find his columns an invaluable source of references and a good counterpoint to the dominant narrative carried in the mainstream media. They are also very entertaining. Enjoy!”
