Given the widespread public interest and disquiet about this case, perhaps in the public interest of maintaining the trust and confidence in our public institutions – this case should be allowed to take its full course in our judicial system.
For the purpose of merely an academic exercise – let’s assume the offer’s assumption that Dinesh will graduate from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
He starts work at a gross salary of $1,500 a month. Including the employer’s CPF contribution of 16 per cent and a 13th month bonus, his monthly total remuneration would be $1,885 per month.
Using the Government’s target of a 30 per cent increase in real wages for the next decade or so, and historical inflation of about two per cent – it means that his salary should increase at about five per cent per annum, until the retirement age of 65.
So, one possible quantum of compensation may be to pay his family, $1,414 ($1,885 less 25 per cent for personal living expenses), increasing at five per cent per annum, backdated to his date of death.
Alternatively, on a lump sum basis, the amount would work out to be about $662,560 assuming a discount rate of five per cent, which is what the civil service has used in the commutation of pensions for political appointment holders and teachers.
Shouldn’t we know when will be “the appropriate time” for the Government to respond to these?
